Placement Test Preparations (Accuplacer)

Camden County College uses Accuplacer for College Placement Testing. Accuplacer is a high stakes test that determines your placement into courses at Camden County College. It is important to prepare and take this test very seriously. Please review sample materials below and attached prior to your test date.

Get a good night’s sleep and have a light meal or snack before testing. Being tired or hungry can hurt your performance on the College Placement Test. Remember to bring your photo ID with you when you come to test. The photo ID can not be a copy, or as a photo on your mobile device.

Additionally, all students should review the Accuplacer or English as a Second Language (ESL) Accuplacer test descriptions below where you will find information about the format and features of the College Placement Test. There is also information about exemptions and accommodations for students with disabilities.

Accuplacer Sample Tests can be viewed in different formats, online as downloadable pdfs as well as through the Free Web-Based Accuplacer app at accuplacer.collegeboard.org/student/practice

When preparing, please review the following sections:

  • Accuplacer Next Generation Reading
  • Writeplacer Essay
  • Accuplacer Next Generation Writing
  • Acuplacer Next Generation Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics (QAS)
  • Accuplacer Next Generation Arithmetic
  • Accuplacer Next Generation Advanced Algebra and Functions (AAF)

It is unlikely that you will need to do all of the above sections, but it is helpful to prepare for each of them. Every student doing the whole test will do at least the Next Generation Reading, Writeplacer Essay, and the QAS section. The second math section (Arithmetic or AAF) will be determined by your performance on the QAS portion. Some students will be required to do the Next Generation Writing test.

English As A Second Language (ESL) students should prepare by reviewing.

  • ESL Accuplacer Reading
  • ESL Writeplacer
  • ESL Accuplacer Listening

Reading and Writing Accuplacer Video Tips

This short video contains tips for responding to the essay prompts in the placement test. Responding to a prompt is not like answering a question. Never begin with “yes” or “no.” The purpose of a writing test is to see how well you can construct an organized essay that supports a central idea. The topics are usually broad so that people of different ages and diverse backgrounds — virtually everyone — can respond.

Use your “sentence sense” to read the sentences in your mind to hear what sounds correct. You want to have a good idea of what a sentence needs to have in order to be correct. You should look to see that the sentence is grammatically correct. The answers that you choose should match the original meaning of the sentence. Finally, make sure that your answers are most consistent with the writing style of the sentence.

The reading comprehension section of the Accuplacer is not timed, so take your time. You can’t return to an answer once given, so take your time to look at all the answers before giving your final answer. The questions fall into a few basic types, including the main idea, purpose questions, detail questions, and questions about how two sentences relate to each other.
